23-year-old Scott Mackillop of Petitcodiac, N.B. has been sentenced after pleading guilty to a charge of mischief over $5,000 in connection with an oil spill in April of 2011 in Petitcodiac.
Information received by District 11 RCMP led to Mackillop's arrest. He was sentenced on March 13, 2012, to a nine month conditional sentence, five months of house arrest, and will be required to perform 120 hours of community service.
On April 4th, 2011, District 11 RCMP received a complaint that four oil drums had been stolen from the Irving lumber mill in Petitcodiac. The oil drums were later located in a wooded area near the mill. They had been tipped over and oil from the barrels had contaminated the ground and there were also concerns about possible water contamination. It cost approximately $165,000 to clean up the spill.
