Liberal leadership hopeful Gallant refuses to comment on abortion

FREDERICTON - New Brunswick Liberal leadership hopeful Brian Gallant was in the capital city today for meetings with Liberal Opposition members. On his way back to the Legislature from lunch, Gallant was asked for his stance on abortion since his two competitors discussed it in the media earlier this week. However, Gallant refused to comment on the subject.

Liberal leadership candidate, Mike Murphy, got tangled up into giving his stance on abortion after it was brought up on the social networking site Twitter a few days ago. Murphy went on record stating his personal view was against abortion, but if in power would follow the provincial law which allows a woman to have an abortion on the consent of two doctors. He added that if he was Premier, and the issue of abortion was opened again, he would put it to his caucus for a free vote.

The other leadership candidate, Nick Duivenvoorden, also gave his position this week. He said he's in favor of abortion as a last resort, but understood it was a decision between a woman and her doctor.

Gallant, however, preferred not to comment today. He said he was on his way to meetings and would discuss it another time with a more thoughtful response.

The issue has been in the media since early in the week. Gallant was asked by various media outlets for his position on abortion since that time, but so far he's yet to go on record with his stance.

  1. With all due respect, this is all getting a little ridiculous.

Of course the topic of abortions is important to many people in New Brunswick, and it's a good thing that we're asking our leaders and prospective leaders what their views are on it. But we have to go about getting this information in an appropriate way.

I believe it's unfair to goad and corner people into giving their opinion on this subject in places like Twitter which doesn't give an individual enough characters for a decent sentence. One can't also expect someone to give the in-depth and thoughtful response this subject requires in "a few seconds" while on their way to a meeting. Good for Brian. It was also incredibly unfair of the CBC to publish a story based on a series of Tweets and half-thoughts.

Mike Murphy made a critical mistake by making a statement via Twitter. I suspect if he had the chance in the appropriate setting and context he could give a very thoughtful response. The same goes for Nick. Perhaps as time goes on they will give us the answers we want in a manner befitting the topic.

    Thanks!
