The Purple Violet Press Asks: Should the abortion issue be re-opened in New Brunswick?

There's been a lot of local chatter on Twitter this week about the abortion issue.

Mike Murphy is running for the Liberal leadership, and he discussed the matter via the social networking site. He said personally, he is pro-life, but that he is bound by the laws in the province to respect the current policy, allowing a woman the right to an abortion.

He also told CBC, if he got back into office and became Premier, he would open up the debate and put it to a free vote in the caucus.

Since this is the first the issue of abortion has been in the news in a while, this publication was curious to hear what New Brunswickers had to say. You can leave a comment anonymously, via alias, or with your name, in the comments section below this post. Thank you.

  2. We don't need a free vote by any "cock"us.. A woman's right is a woman's right. NBers complain now about the stress that we are in financially as a province.. Just wait and see what would happen if women were forced to have babies, or use alternative means to terminate a pregnancy. We will see a medical cost rise and user rates of the social assistance program increase.

  3. Mr. Murphy: You will never get many of the women's vote in New Brunswick (not that you would ever get mine) if you think you can continue to control women. It is time this archaic control by religions and governments ends. It is my feeling that Conservatives and Liberals will never get elected in this province again.

    1. How does Mike Murphy try and control women? This is the most outrageous and unfounded statement I've heard in a while

  5. Have been regularly checking your blog; first discovered it while researching Shale gas news stories last summer.

It's wonderful to have an independent citizen-led news source on important NB issues. Keep up the great work!! :)

  7. This is not quite accurate. He didn't tell the CBC he would reopen it. He said that IF it were to become an issue again he would reopen. He wouldn't simply reopen it for fun.
